British utility Anglian Water awards cloud contract for sewer monitoring

British utility Anglian Water has awarded a cloud contract for sewer monitoring services.

According to the notice of award, Anglian Water contracted with three suppliers for £140 million ($190m) on September 9: Environmental telemetry companies Metasphere and Udlive, and battery-powered measuring device company Technolog.

This will see the trio supply around 50,000 to 60,000 sewer level monitoring devices to monitor sewer levels and sewer derived flow.

The description added that the companies would provide devices “with communications to cloud based data centers via MQTT or HTTPS being utilized if MQTT is not available.”

It added: “Provision of a platform to visualise data produced by the devices and metadata must be included. Provision of data and licensing must be also included for the life of the devices.”

The estimated contract dates run for three years from 1 October 2025 to 30 September 2027, with a possible three-year extension to 30 September 2031.

The tender is currently in a “standstill period,” which is a period of time in which unsuccessful bidders could challenge or call for a review of the decision. This will end on 22 September 2025.
