Dubai has unveiled The Loop, a 93 km sustainable urban highway that aims to become the smartest cycling and running infrastructure in the world and which aligns with the emirate’s 20-minute city initiative.
Designed by sustainable cities developer Urb, it seeks to connect more than three million residents with a healthy mode of transport and key services and locations within minutes.
Climate controlled environment
The Loop will provide a climate controlled all-year environment, to make walking and cycling the primary mode of transport for Dubai’s residents for daily commutes for more than 80 per cent of Dubai’s residents by 2040.
The zero emission strucutre will be integrated with a kinetic floor for clean energy and use 100 per cent recycled water for irrigation. It will also feature vertical farms for food security and additional amenities for residents.
“Dubai is the best place for entrepreneurship in urban mobility,” says Urb CEO, Baharash Bagherian. “The Loop project is an embodiment of that entrepreneurial spirit, which aims to make Dubai the most connected city on earth by foot or bike.
“The Loop is the future of urban mobility infrastructures, which are more than sustainable transport systems. These types of infrastructures are spaces and utilities for people, where various leisure and community services can also be provided.
“These types of infrastructures are an enjoyable mode of sustainable transport, no matter the weather conditions.”
“The Loop is currently at the R&D stage and is one of a number of smart city projects being developed by Urb, which is headquartered in Dubai Design District. Others include The Parks in Africa, which will be home to 150,000 people and aims to produce 100 per cent of its energy, water and food on site to become a self-sufficient destination.
